NAV-SAT, MIL-SAT, and ECHELON w/ misc satellite freq. index ...A Hobby By PhoneTap s0n Crew ©1999 "we got your phone tapped, what you gonna do?" -PhoneTap by The Firm __________________________________________________________ The earth is surrounded by artificial satellites today. Many of these satellites carry repeaters and are used for communications. In recent years satellites have been placed in synchronous orbits, providing continuous communications capability among almost all possible parts of the globe. In the 1960's, a series of passive satellites was launched into orbit around the earth. These were large metallized balloons that reflected radio waves sent up to them. The Echo satellites were placed in low orbits because the existing boosters could not loft a satellite in a synchronous orbit. The area of coverage for each Echo satellite was limited by the low orbit, and access time was brief. The active communications satellite was developed after the Echo satellites. An active communications satellite is an orbiting repeater with broadband characteristics. The signal from the ground station is intercepted, converted to another frequency and then repeated at a moderate power level. This provides much better signal strength at the receiving end of the circuit, as compared with a signal reflected by a passive satellite. The first active satellites were placed into low orbit and had the same problems as the original Echo satellites. In the end active communications satellites were placed in synchronous orbits, making it possible to use then with fixed antennas, a moderate level of transmitter power, and at any time of the day or the night. Synchronous satellites are used for television and radio broadcasting, communications, military, and weather applications. The telephone networks also regularly apply satellite technology. SAT-NAV Satellite navigation also commonly called SAT-NAV, a technology available to commercial shipping and people who own boats, can provide a position that is accurate within 100 feet of true position. SAT-NAV receivers are radio navigational aids for ships that receive signals from transit satellite systems as they pass above. The satellite systems generally update the boat's position every hour and a half. SAT-NAV receivers process latitude and longitude and provide data for a range and bearing display to specific places known as way-points. Some receivers also store predictions for the favorable positions of as many as 50 soon to be satellites for navigation and provide notice to indicate their availablity on the SAT-NAV network. With SAT-NAV it might be necessary to dead reckon or plot the ship's position with known information on heading, speed, and course to figure a accurate position between satellite passes. Some SAT-NAV receivers are equipped with equipment to compute this from manual input. The computer can provide ship's speed made good (SMG) and course made good (CMG), the course to steer, true or magnetic and the distance to the next waypoint. Some also offer waypoint approach alarms. When used in conjunction with loran, current position can be accurately determined. MIL-SAT Military reconnaissance or surveillance satellites are usually placed in low orbit so they pass repeatedly over regions of the earth of interest to governments that launched them. They might be equipped with radar infrared sensors, broadband radio receivers television cameras, photographic cameras and different combinations of these systems. US Military communications satellites use uplink frequencies of 8Ghz and downlink frequencies of 7Ghz. FLTSATCOM is a example of a satellite with a relativly strong downlink. It is accessable at... FLTSATCOM 8 at 23.1 degr.W and UFO-7 at 23.5 degr. W in the P-band...they additionally use the UHF band of the MAREC and INMARSATs (200-400 MHz). However I think that I should carry the warning over that unwanted and pirate trafic via this satellite-system is also dangerous, because using a high-power transmitter would kill nearly all military traffic so listen, tune in, but I would not suggest attempting to piggy-back this one. This satellite is reportedly used by the US Navy and all traffic is secure. However after reading into some information I found on this system it seems to be another swiss cheese security attempt by the DOD. Another example of military applications of satellite systems was the recently destroyed satellite that was to be carried into space when the Lockheed Martin Titan exploded. The following is what I have been able to dig up on that via various sources. Satellite Name: Mercury SIGINT Expected Deployment: Over Africa targeting the middle east and Afghanistan. Mission: Signal Intelligence including interception of telecom from the now wanted Osama bin Ladin. I dont know of the classified status of the above materials or if this information was released publicly, but I am assuming that it was. It is just another fine example of military application of satellite technology. The satellite technology of other countries is comparable and some of the more noteable ones are SKYNET, MAREC, COSMOS (russian), and INMARSAT (200-400mhz). The purpose of these most versatile satellites is to supply TV images, enable normal telecommunications and to serve the military, who use the lower C-band (below 3.65 GHz). Worth listening to is RADUGA 29 (drifting) at approximately 12.3° East. Switch from the Hot Bird position to the C-band and use the black carriers to target the satellite. FDM and SCPC can be found here. Outside of the UHF, L, S and C-band the military is increasingy moving into the X-band. UKUSA and ECHELON UKUSA was originally an agreement between the USA and England. A result of the cold war. The plan called for highly sensitive equipment to be used to spy on the enemy. This would require positions for listening to be put in at various strategic locations throughout the free world. Canada, New Zealand and Australia were also involved in the project. The project was given the codename ECHELON. Today these computers are fed mainly with information intercepted from satellites. "INTELSAT, a world-wide satellite communications organisation, handles almost 90% of all satellite communications, wheather telephone calls, fax or data transmissions from the major networks (e.g. Internet)." This is, naturally a target of these intercept posts. It would be possible to listen into every conversation or read every fax. The computers are fed with search words and only react when they cross one of them. The details of the secret service in question and the address of the associated computer network is stored. If, for example, the British secret service GCHQ wants to know anything about the content of communications made by Company A in the Pacific, the name of the company, its fax number, the name of possible and known partners, its e-mail address and any extra search words which might prove useful are fed into the ECHELON dictionary at the Waihopi station (codename Flintlock). When it picks up any of these codewords, the network will collect, automatically assess and transfer the data - without the secret service in New Zealand (GCSB) being informed of the content - to the address of the British ECHELON computer in the spy station in Morwenstow, New Zealand and Australia often receive only a snippet of the information which has been collected. The geographical location of the individual ECHELON stations is selected so that various beams of the INTELSATs can be received within the reception range. Following is a list of intercept station locations that I have located. Again these are varified locations. 1.Yakima station: in the Yakima Firing Centre around 200 km south west of Seattle, USA. Monitors the INTELSATs in the western and eastern Pacific. (5 parabolic antennas. Four are pointed to the west and a fifth, smaller antenna checks out the INMARSAT-2.) 2.Leitrim station in Canada: is responsible for the Latin-American satellites. 3.Sugar Grove station: situated in the mountains of Virginia, this station listens in to the INTELSATs in the Atlantic which broadcast to North and South America (Specialises in spot beams). 4.Morwenstow station: one of the most important stations, under the control of the British service GCHQ. It serves the satellites between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. 5.Bad-Aibling station: this station, located in Upper Bavaria, may be small, but it has a big job to do - it keeps tabs on the INTELSAT positions between 66° East and 53° West, plus various regional satellites such as TELECOM, DFS and EUTELSAT. In addition, Bad-Aibling is the downlink station for various American military communications and spy satellites. 6.Misawa station: Station for the North Pacific - can't be touched by the Japanese government. 7.Geraldton station: situated in West Australia. Monitors the orbit over the Pacific and Indian oceans. 8.Waihopi station: on the south island of New Zealand, supports the other stations in the region. 9.Shoal Bay station: in northern Australia, keeps the Indonesian satellites in check. There are probably two more stations, one of which might well be on the Ascension Islands - the other is a replacement for the Hong Kong station, which has now become worthless. It is clear that the reception ranges of the individual stations have a large overlap area with one another. If, for technical or political reasons, stations have to be closed down, they can quickly be replaced with others. So how come I've got a copy of the e-mail sent to Messrs Bush, Reagan, North and Pointdexter? A leak in the oh-so-secret ECHELON system? Or the political machinations of the omnipotent NSA? Course, If just your average-every day techno-terrorist can get this information, imagine what China knows. Even with all this super secret funding, massive technological listening posts, "incredible" security (read: swiss cheese) the government still has flaws, and apparently not even the black-budget NSA, and CIA can keep a secret.
