Carrier Identification Code (CIC) Asssignments

Based on information from Industry Canada - Canadian Numbering Administrator, also listed on Bellcore/FCC lists of CIC assignments, and verified through recorded announcements associated with each CIC.

as of 23 April 1996.

Description: the Canadian carriers and the CICs assigned to them is listed below. A CIC may be set up in the following two ways:

1) 4-digit Feature Group B numbers are used in 1 950.xxxx numbers with the xxxx portion being the CIC. When dialed, 950 numbers will access carrier tones after which calls are completed with account codes and dialing the destination number. (Identified as 4D FGB in the list)

2) 3-digit Feature Group D numbers are used in 10xxx codes for "casual calling" purposes. The 10xxx code is dialed (where the xxx part represents the 3-digit CIC) then the destination number is dialed as 1+ or 0+ then area code then number. This is used to select a long distance carrier other than the line's default carrier. (Identified as 3D FGD in the list)

3) New 4-digit Feature Group D numbers are being introduced in the 101xxxx format. These function similar to 3-digit CICs, but allow for a greater number of CIC assignments.

Notes (numbers in brackets such as [1], [2], etc) follow the listing. This list is an unofficial transcription from the CIC list as of April 1996; Industry Canada data prevails in the event of discrepancy.

555 number assignments in Canada

The 555 prefix numbers have been opened up for special uses, such as the 555.1313 "Name That Number" service by the Stentor companies (Bell, et. al). These are ultimately administered by Bellcore for use in North America. Thanks to the Canadian Numbering Administrator's notes (as of 16 April 1996), these assignments (for the last four digits of the 555.xxxx number) are:

Notes:

In the "for NPA's" column, the area codes for which the code is effective are
given:

 * CANADA means the 555 number is for all areas in Canada.

 * NANP means the number is in effect throughout the North American
Numbering Plan (U.S., Canada, Caribbean - i.e. World Zone 1).

 * "ONT, QUE" means Ontario and Quebec area codes (i.e. based on
   Bell Canada areas)

A 4-letter acronym in brackets ("ZZZZ") means a guess at a dial spelling of the 555 number.

There is a National/Non-National classification for these numbers, perhaps suggesting that 555 numbers could be re-used in different regions if they were not "National" numbers. 555 numbers listed are Non-National unless the notes column indicates "National".
