It then occured to us that we're a year old, and that we have succeeded in our primary purpose, slagging and slacking in "e-LecTroLaNd". Don't get me wrong! The issues are the same. This read is forever dedicated to slagging the rascals that are in place to control communication and information. It is obvious that the internet is a massive video game which appears to mirror of the universe..The same random beauty to be sure. "e-LecTroLaNd", a place you can call your own for $20 bux-a-month. "e-LecTroLaNd", the new backyard for your "cyber" kids to play in! "e-LecTroLaNd", now you're "online!". For a minimal investment of intellect and pecunium, any average snoid can find fame and folly in..."e-LecTroLaNd" In no time you'll find your spot in "e-LecTroLaNd". Control issues? Not a problem, simply join Usenet and pretend you own the internet. You'll fool somebody for sure. Become an administrator, assume power, dig your heels in against anything that contravenes the "agreement" We've gone through a few, heh :) If it's not "netiquette", you'll surely get a zapped. But you will be able to call in the CRTC, the FCC, government and the police if things get too out-of-hand. Anything is possible in."e-LecTroLaNd" It's all true moms and dads, the porno, the litigation, the twisted news, the wargames, the bootleg files, videos, digital samples of sin, the netsex, irc robots for your pleasure and the instant gratification of sending mail without having to wait in line for stamps. INFOBAHN '95, right this way. The maelstrom gains momentum, perhaps a 100 million "online" this year? The milk of computer science. Here we are, in a state of pure spontaneity, resembling none other than the chaos and complexity of our own universe. So what say WE put it all through the NET.SCANDAL wringer!!! (oh what fun!) Let us see who ends up in the soapy water. Another full year of eluding responsibility while dismantling the behemoth of clumsy control and its' insane commitment to harness the random elements of communication. NET.SCANDAL pledges to continue irritaining those who have the capacity to understand that the only values meaning to life are slacking and slagging. Our position is; that through these healthy pastimes we may glean some insight of our "matters" by stripping away the pretense and the mile-high heap of "cyber" jetsam. -------- A letter was composed asking some favourite slackers and slaggers to submit a brief composition to inform and entertain. The list of people was chosen because they were the most easily accessed in the newsgroups close to home ( trn in a haze at 5:00 am EST). There are so many good writers on the net that I simply grabbed the loudest slaggers and the smoothest slackers. You decide. Those who submitted nothing are as important to our ends as those who did, for they provided us with "some" irritainment last year. ...and may well be: a. simply slacking b. slagging us with silence c. both All vital components of NET.SCANDAL! Unfortunately, I see ourselves at the end of the 'golden age' of Internet. Like anything else, all good things become just too popular. WarGames ended hacking and phreaking, and the attention the net is getting is ruining our little universe...sigh. We are being swamped with newbies that have never seen a UNIX shell, never used the nn reader (still my personal favourite) and have never had to encounter a VAX system without a manual - never mind even use a VAX in the first place. Yes, the classic "when I was your age" ramble... What brought it all home to me was when my DAD came home to announce that he now has e-mail...and wants me to explain "those funny circley a's". What I'd like to see in the future is people getting net access for the right reasons, not just because it's "K-K00l". I wish they would appreciate the immense power the net has, and use it to their advantage. Our Comments; I think the big Internet issue in 1995 will be the influx of censorship. I fear ISPs will be expelling users because some people disagree with the users' posts, or the manner in which the bad girls and boys express themselves. Others will refrain from really speaking their minds out of fear of expulsion, turning Usenet, and the net in general, into a backwater of tired old thoughts. My babe Pie-face feels that in 1995, Usenet will become the new frontier for non-profit fundraisers looking for money. Newsgroups and mailboxes will be flooded with posts asking for money for kids with cancer, babies born with no brains, artists with AIDS ... you name it. Scams will flourish. I predict that Ross Perot will establish a WWW home page containing those charts he used while running for President last time around. On a more serious note, I'd expect to see more of this in 1995: businesses getting on-line, Web traffic growing rapidly, and government taking a more active interest in the happenings here. The arrival of a new generation of service providers means established firms will have to come up with creative ways to improve the value of what they deliver to hang onto their customers. In 1995, some firms will wake up to the fact that the Internet enables types of international business relationships that were never possible before -- including the outsourcing of services that were not economical to do previously. In this respect, I think 1995 will be the first year that the Internet is seen as an equalizing force between developed and developing nations. It's too early for major economic impacts; however, change is in the wind. ************************************************************************* *THE TRAVEL SECTION* ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IRC: The Instant Frontier Zillions of clients hardwired to wicked network.
