SERIOUS USENET ALLEGATIONS
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^


Through it unscathed...last week's issue took a serious beating at the 
hands of the censors. These travesties of freedom have and will continue 
to be reported by this publication. Most notably, the First Class/Onenet 
network, carried out their predictable campaign of message deletion and 
manipulation. In a BBS system environment, riddled with administrator 
empowered moderators, this is not in the least surprising, they are after 
all, the bottom rung on the ladder of communications integrity.


Censorship also reared its freaky head last week in some Usenet forums, 
with the discovery of some forged message cancellations in several
discussions. Speculation is that these hand-written cancellations came
from a user that has access to a local site. It should be clearly noted, 
the administration at 'Hookup' played no part in this incident, and 
suspended the account belonging to the person responsible until the 
matter is resolved.


The first indications that this behavior might occur, were related to 
this editor in a telephone discussion from a source who wishes to remain 
anonymous. The story was related to me as follows. 


Certain 'elitist' UNIX-savvy individuals, who have the ability to 'manipulate'


messages, discussed the procedure at length at our 'favorite' Masonic UNIX 
meeting several weeks ago. These 'manipulators', suggested ways of blocking 
their messages from being read at domains where the 'Doctors' have accounts. 


Unlike a BBS, where content is expected to be manipulated by moderators 
and administrators, Usenet forums have stayed alive and vital owing to a 
*complete abhorrence for any form of this message manipulation. We are 
assured that a certain measure of integrity existed, until now! 


However, persons who rock the Usenet cradle with material deemed antisocial, 
or inflammatory, are libelously accused of posing a potential hazard to 
the net by a 'cabal' of INTERNET heavies. I would assume the husband and 
wife lawfirm in Arizona, are still digging themselves out of the hacks and 
sabotage, long after their now famous "Green Card Lottery" crosspost. 


The primary 'dog' the 'cabal' uses is a steady drone of replies that 
undermine and attempt to stifle the user. At planet.org, one of our daily 
chores is culling those messages that bear addressing, out of the flotsam 
of ignorant 'UseDrone'.


In a systematic 'cabal' process, that attempts to silence the 'offender', 
one might receive any or all of the following missives.


(All directed at the good Doctors by Usenet paranoids)


"You don't know anything about 'netiquette!" 
"Why are you sending these messages to MY newsgroup!"
"Dr. Joe poses the greatest single threat to modern civilization!"
"The Doctors read private mail at their site!"
"The Doctors are lunatics, netloons, loons"
"We'll complain to your admins, we'll have your accounts deleted!"
"We'll mail-bomb your site!"


....need I further argue this point? They sound like rotten children.


When these methods fail, there are other 'dirty tricks' used to further 
this control. A carefully written message cancellation script may be fed 
into a system so that an individual's posts get cancelled completely, 
before they are read by any users. The following message , better 
explains this incident.

The Cypherpunks' remailers allow you to send anonymous mail by adding the
header Request-Remailing-To: and sending to one of the addresses listed 
below. Most (but not all) of these remailers also accept Anon-To: in place 
of Request-Remailing-To. These headers must be typed exactly as you see 
them; most remailers are case-sensitive. Mail without these headers is

If you can not add the required headers, place two colons (::) on the very
first line of your message, then on the next line type Request-Remailing-To:
and the address you want to send anonymously to. Skip a line, and then
begin your message. Note that by using this method it is possible to send
a message consecutively thru more than one remailer.


remai...@soda.berkeley.edu works slightly differently. It includes an
encrypted reply block so that people can reply to your messages. It also
requires that you use the header Anon-Send-To: to send anonymously, and
features a direct usenet posting service. For more information on this
remailer, finger remai...@soda.berkeley.edu, or send mail to the remailer
with the Subject: remailer-info


You can add additional headers to your message by placing two number signs 
(##) at the beginning of the first line of the message body, and then add 
the special headers on subsequent lines. The bsu remailers require that 
you place the Subject: header in the body of the message, after the ##. 
The original subject line is removed.


There is a pseudonym-based anonymous remailer at anon.penet.fi.
