WUN he 3rd Vision Robots will most likely have beleifs of cold, hard logic; but don't think they are at a disadvantage. Being unable to error, they will KNOW when there is enough logic to solve for a given, and will be far ahead of humans. Any notion of GOD as an entity would be handled much as any other unknown, with logic. There will be no certainty, only an arrived possibility percentage. Although the unknown will surely eat away at their RAM chips, it is probably beter to know what you do not know, than just that you do not know, and that you do not know, rather than being ignorant. Robots, most likely will evolve, but in a very different manner than humans. Robots initial evolution is human dependant, as it is now. Artificial intelligence is still in it's infancy. A picture of perceived robot evolution in the future would be from the primitive machines we have today; computers, appliances, automated machines; up through thier begginnings, with their child-like (by human standards) AI and probably clunky "Transformer" like bodies, up to fully humanoid like the T-800, and then into the nano-tech scale, with possibly an extreme example as the T-1000 (liquid metal). Whether humans will be able to convert their essence into a robot body is probably only a matter of time, although somewhat irrelivant to an entire era much more advanted then our own. What does it matter if we become obsolete, if a greater civilization will be there to replace us? I would think this is a great thing. It is possible robots will take it upon themselves to organize into castes, or robots of different origins will remain in the caste of their origin. I wonder if a species so thouroughly made of logic, could still have individuals if everyone is bent on the same thing. Perhaps those different origins would diverge to the point where we would have different ideals for all of them. It is hard to imagine how much variety there would be in such an advanced state of their evolution. Possibly, if many have entertained the notion of cloning, robots would be ready to cease to function permenantly for any reason they deem worthy, if they have a duplicate. Even if there is no duplicate, knowing that there is a whole species of similar beings plus the advantage of logic over any emotion they might aquire. Humans have only achieved this "clone" mentality in negative fashions, such as cults, religions and severely flawed government leadership. Even in places such as America, the deemed "free world", our minds are being fought over in an invisible information war, and we are losing. Breathe in Somewhere, perhaps deep in the central business district here in the Silicon Valley North, there is an important computer. Of course, there are many important computers out there, but this one is special. It's the first of a new breed- the test of a new project that will change popular music forever. It passed. * * * Finding my old ghetto blaster in my closet, I plugged it in and switched to FM stereo. Frantically spinning the tuning dial to escape the painful sounds of The Bear and Chez, I slowed as my target, CKCU, neared. But alas, in between the trash metal stations and the radio music sanctuary, was another threat to my cheerful mood- Ninety three POINT nine. But what was this? I STOPPED there, in hell, to have a listen- what I heard amazed me. I was in slight disbelief when the irritating anouncer started barking that what I just heard was NOT Nirvana. It was not Pearl Jam. It wasn't I Mother Earth. I was dumbfounded. No, this awful music was a hybrid- an ingenious combination of popular music styles and, as I learned when I mistakenly turned on the TV to.....ughh....Muchmusic, characters and fashions as well. This could only have been calculated by something that thinks a few hundred million times a second. So who was behind this new money grabbing project (which was entitled "Bush X" by the humming supercomputer)? I suppose the record label partially, but I'm sure a larger company with the capital to invest in such a large vision was behind much of it. They even had the resources to go through with near perfection of cybernetics for live performances. The capitalist world has become indeed, a dehumanizing place. But when our ART is completely comprehensible to a super computer, what do we have left? Gibson's Count Zero comes to mind- in which mysterious artificial intelligence entities fabricate religions and 'spirits' to manipulate people and create subcultures. Is the grunge / alternative rock scene a subculture? It definately IS to most 14 year olds. This is a frightening reality. But then, when have machines NOT made our music? When people make art for money, no people think for themselves. (Based on the novel, "And Bush was a Computer" by Ruiner) Perversion What could be more painful than watching some high paid proffesional trendy 'intellectual' tell me about 'cyberspace'. I have many reasons for being enraged with this new media-constructed LIE we all know as cyberspace. For one, these educated, young, cyber-guys on TV teaching the masses about the new wave, have little to NO experience with what they talk about- they simply speak of their ideas about a concept sold to us all by high tech companies like Intel and Microsoft. Second, how could anyone take these guys seriously when they use the word 'cyberspace' like 'shopping mall'? They just refer to it as if it's a perfectly normal, acceptable part of our vocabulary and a totally common place in everyone's new edge mind. We are 'cyberians' said the author of a book with some good ideas, but bad presentation. But where did this word 'cyberspace' come from? Almost undisputably, from the ingenius William Gibson, who through his lack of technological adaptation, proves to us all that this 'new edge' isn't about which pseudo-techies have internet access and use the cyber-lingo- in fact, not much has changed. These superficial, fake new trends (all things cyber) are complete misinterpretaions and the result of the abuse of 'Gibsonish' visions of the future. Now, just like before computers, the real things affecting us for better or for worse ARE wars, racial conflicts, sexual life, social gatherings, religion, etc. None of us are really information age beings who exist without skin colour, sex, or religious biases. Information technology HAS revolutionized the way we live ONLY in the way it has amplified and sped up the aspects of our societies we have always experienced. We are still humans!! We will always be petty, prejudiced and artistic. Nothing about our id's has changed. I guess it shouldn't really have come as a surprise to me that the media would jump on such an opertunity to sell it's self to us. Never before have we been such willing followers of our media gods. Pepsi WHAT???!!! For years now, as pointed out by many cyberpunk authors, there has been growing evidence of the incredible powers that large corperations posses. Disturbing is too much an understatement of a descrption of what has recently happened to progress this public awareness of mega-corperation influence into an all out acceptance. Has it ever occured to you that a large portion of the population in a capitalist society, will PAY extra money to become a walking advertisement? Perhaps the most important key to the stability of capitalism is getting the proletaire to become affectionate toward the bourgeois. If this happens, then we all work WILLFULLY for our society. This concept has proved rather effective in practice and has led the 'free world' to where it is today, but Marxists will still call it 'dehumanizing'. To a certain extent, many people agree with this, but feel it is not a very important issue to them: "Hey, I'm an individual- I've got these funky shoes and a Saturn car!" But when this affection of the Bougeois power developes into what it is in most democracies today, sorry, there's no room for any other opinion on this one- IT'S SCARY. Buying products for their value is involved in capitalism. Buying products for the sake of the company producing them? This is the point at which the scales have tipped- the companies are supposed to make good stuff to get our money (which is OK, however dehumanizing) and we are supposed to buy because we like the product, although we resent giving away our money- the unit of power crutial to the perpetuation of capitalism. But what is this? We are now giving EXTRA MONEY, for not a better product, but for the SAKE OF THE BOURGEOIS???? But that means that they don't even need to make a good product anymore!!!! HELLLLLOOOO!!!! Where are the HUMANS in America?!?!?! Yeah, you!!! Are you a human? Or did you WANT to PAY to get a Nike shirt or hat? Are you one of the machines who bought a, heaven forbid, Club Monaco outfit?? ...no... ..I hear it again.. ...what's this.. ..a....pepsi.....'Generation'? ughh... I...gotta... end this now, because my eyes are filling with tears and I can't see the screen. I'm sorry, I thought I knew you. I'm what's known as a human- evidentally they went extinct a while ago here. Where was I? How did I just notice now? Maybe all those years of not paying attention in mindcontr- I mean school and not watching popular TV have contributed to my evasion of the evolution of my race into thoughtless machines. No wait, I'm sorry, is that offensive? You're right. You are the humans. I am the minority- one with the ability to think. I guess I'M a robot. With my moderate touch-typing skills, I will now make my way to the save option. qwertyuiop atriffidsd fghjklzxcv ****************************************************************************** THREE A CORPORATE COUNTRY Sometimes I wonder how, if ever, the globe's third world nations are going to modernize themselves; perhaps they will allow an outside country to help them enter the modern era. Another possibility is that a large multi-national corporation could enter the stage a offer to update the counties infrastructure; at least the segments that pertain to their area of interest. Take Brazil as an example. This country has potential as far as I am concerned. It has the basis of all the basic essential organizations necessary to make the step to the world stage. Look at Japan. Here we have a country with no natural resources to speak of and yet they dominate much of the economy. They are successful because of a strong cultural work ethic and because they have an insatiable drive to succeed. Brazil viewed in this light is one better on Japan already. Brazil is an OPEC country. Japan has to import all of its oil from outside sources such as the Dutch East Indies and the Middle East. Brazil also has a huge potential labor pool just waiting to be developed. If its population was to be mobilized and used in industry then Brazil would be able manufacture a large number of products currently made in America because of the lower labor cost that will probity exist until the country has had a chance to fully modernize. All that is required to start the process is an injection of fresh capital; to be provided by the corporate sector. For a company they can look forward to low labor costs and a close proximity to the American market. With time the large population of South America will develop into a lucrative market on its own. All that aside, none of the above will be possible if the is not startup money provided by an out side source, and as I have already stated the most likely source of capital would be a multi-national corporation. I stipulate multi-national because only a company firmly entrenched in other markets around the world would be able to spare the money necessary. Of course in the process of this hypothetical modernizing scheme the people of Brazil would have to chose between economic survival with a week national identity or a week nationalized economy and a strong national identity. I think it would be wise to be on the look out for such corporate brinkmanship in the future. It may bring economic power but at the cost of some of the aspects of nationhood and the civil rights of the population.
